Neurodivergence

Therapy for neurodivergent individuals in Halifax, NS

Neurodiversity refers to the concept that neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive variations, are a natural and valuable part of human diversity. Rather than viewing these differences as disorders that need to be cured or fixed, neurodiversity promotes the idea that these variations should be respected and accepted as part of the human experience. It emphasizes that people with different brain types may have unique strengths and perspectives, and that society should be more inclusive and accommodating of these differences.

Here at Crossroads, we welcome and provide support to individuals of all abilities through personalized and informed care. We aim to provide a safe space for you to be exactly who you are while receiving the help you need.

Approaches we take to ensure quality care are:

  1. Recognize the uniqueness of each individual and understanding that everyone has different strengths, challenges and needs.
  2. Using a strengths-based approach to build self-esteem and foster empowerment.
  3. Adapting communication styles as needed; including the use of visual aids, written information, non-verbal communication, and more.
  4. Creating a sensory-friendly environment (E.g., low-lighting, reduced noise, comfortable seating options, fidget toys, etc.).
  5. Collaboration with family, caregivers, and/ or other healthcare professionals to ensure that services and supports are comprehensive and consistent, as well as ensuring the highest level of support for the individual.
  6. Using evidence-based and up-to-date approaches, tailored to the individual’s needs.
  7. Respecting autonomy and encouraging self-advocacy, as we truly believe each individual has valuable insights into their own well-being, experiences and overall desires for care.
  8. Providing patient and flexible approaches to best suit the individual’s needs and learning styles in a therapeutic setting.
