Finding the Path Forward: Psychoeducational Assessments in Hammonds Plains

In our years of studying the human experience, we’ve learned that there is nothing more courageous than seeking to understand the “why” behind our struggles. When a student—whether they are a child just starting out or a young adult navigating university—starts to feel like they are falling behind, a sense of shame can start whispering that they aren’t enough.

But here is the truth: Struggle is not a reflection of worth; it’s a call for deeper understanding.

At Crossroads Counselling & Psychological Services, we provide psychoeducational assessments in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. We don’t just look at data points; we look at the whole person. Our goal is to move from “What is wrong?” to “What do you need to thrive?”

What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

Think of this process as a map. Sometimes, we feel lost in the woods of learning, and we need a compass to find our way out. If you or your child are facing hurdles with school or work, an assessment can help us lean into the discomfort and find clarity.

We specialize in supporting students up to 30 years old, uncovering the “why” behind:

  • Learning Disorders (including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia)
  • ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • Giftedness (the beautiful, often complex reality of “high-potential” minds)
  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Social and Emotional functioning

Please note that some universities and colleges sometimes offer bursaries to help cover assessment costs. Clients are encouraged to explore opportunities with their academic support centre.

Our Process: A Journey of Connection

We know that “testing” can feel scary. That’s why we’ve designed our process to be a collaboration rooted in empathy and trust.

  • The Intake Interview (1-2 hours): We start with a conversation. Whether in person at our Hammonds Plains office or virtually, we’ll dive into the history, the hopes, and the hurdles.
  • One-to-One Testing (6-8 hours): We spend quality time together exploring cognitive abilities and academic skills. We break this up to honor your energy and focus.
  • Gathering the Village: With your permission and when deemed appropriate, we connect with teachers and other professionals to get a 360-degree view of the story.
  • The Feedback Meeting (1-2 hours): This is where we sit down—parent to parent, or clinician to client—and look at the results together. We talk about the strengths and the “growth edges” in plain, kind language.
  • The Assessment Report: You’ll receive a tangible, actionable guide. This isn’t just a document; it’s a roadmap for support.
