What Are ADHD and Psychoeducational Assessments?

Navigating school challenges can be tough, and a psychoeducational assessment is often recommended when students encounter difficulties. These challenges may stem from various sources, including learning obstacles, hidden giftedness, attentional or behavioral issues, or social and emotional struggles.

Our ADHD and psychoeducational assessments follow a thorough and thoughtful process designed to understand and enhance your child’s experience, especially within the school environment. We take a comprehensive approach, gathering insights from multiple sources to evaluate your child’s strengths and areas for growth. This includes assessing their learning and academic skills, as well as their social, emotional, and behavioral well-being. Our aim is to identify any barriers to success and provide personalized recommendations to help your child thrive at school and beyond.

Our assessments can uncover a range of issues, such as learning disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), giftedness, or intellectual disabilities. Most importantly, our focus is on delivering actionable recommendations to support and uplift your child’s overall functioning.

How We Conduct the Assessment

  • Intake Interview (1 to 2 hours): Our journey begins with an intake interview involving the client’s parent(s)/guardian(s) or with young adult clients (up to 17 years old). This initial meeting allows us to understand the referral reason and current concerns, as well as gather important background information. We review developmental, medical, family, and educational histories. You can choose to have this interview in person or virtually, whichever suits your family best.
  • One-to-One Testing (6 to 8 hours): Testing typically takes place over two separate sessions or in one full day. During these sessions, your child will engage in various activities designed to assess cognitive abilities and academic skills.
  • Information Gathering: Our thorough assessment process includes reviewing your child’s school records and gathering insights from teachers through standardized questionnaires and interviews. We may also consult with other professionals if needed, such as speech-language pathologists or pediatricians.
  • Feedback Meeting with Parents or Young Adult Client (1 to 2 hours): Once the assessment is complete, we’ll meet with you to discuss the results and recommendations. This feedback session can be held in person or virtually, according to your preference.
  • Feedback Meeting with Child or Adolescent (0.5 hours): We also provide a feedback session for the child or adolescent, if appropriate.
  • Assessment Report: After our feedback session, you’ll receive a detailed report that outlines the assessment process, findings, and personalized recommendations.
  • Feedback Meeting with School (if requested; virtual): If desired, we can arrange a virtual meeting with your child’s school to go over the assessment results and recommendations. This collaborative meeting typically includes you, the psychologist, your child’s teachers, a school administrator, and any support staff such as resource teachers or guidance counselors.
